Since 2007 Dave Castro has overseen the CrossFit Games which are conducted every summer through 2021. Athletes at the Games compete in workouts that they only learn about hours before the event and which occasionally include unexpected components that are not typical of a CrossFit routine. The Games introduced an online qualification structure in 2011, making it easier for athletes from all around the world to participate. The certification process for CrossFit coaches has four levels. A coach simply needs a level one certification to open a CrossFit-affiliated gym.

The introductory level, Level One (CF-L1), has participants attend a group weekend session to discuss. The foundational principles of CrossFit and learning how to lead their own courses. Techniques are
